The Fighting Ground Theme

It was June 16, 1775 as colonel William Prescott and his men at Bunker hill protecting it from the British. The British line up with their cannons and soldiers they fire 2 or 3 Americans were killed. The Americans fire killed 4 British. British fire, kill 5 Americans. Americans turn, the Colonel says fire. They missed. The British shot one more time and shot down the rest of the men. We have lost the battle but the war is not over. The book I am reading is called the Fighting Ground by Avi. The theme of this book is effects of war.

One story that looks at the effects of war  is The Fighting Ground. That is the theme because a young thirteen year old boy left his home to go fight in the war. He fought in the war to fight for their independence from the UK. When he leaves, his family is sad to see him go. As the church bells ring he runs to see the British but instead of the British it is the hessians(A group of hired Germans to go terrorize  towns).

Another story that has the effects of war theme is The Hunger Games. During the hunger games the main characters are fighting for their food and little of their independence such as the book The Fighting Ground. In both books they are also fighting for they’re families.

War has a lot of affects on families. When a family member leaves to go to war the family gets sad. During the war some families might get a call or a letter telling that whoever was in the war has got shot and killed. War can cause a lot of sadness in families.

Character Development

Percy Jackson is an interesting character throughout the book “The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. The main character Percy Jackson, changes a lot since he started as an outcast who gets picked on daily and he figures out that he was the Demigod that everyone wants to be and looks up to.

Percy’s change didn’t happen overnight though; it took him the course of the book for his true colors to show. Beginning the book off, Percy has a negative view on life; he thinks that thanks to his ADHD and dyslexia he's going to amount to nothing at life. Little does he know at the time that these two things are his greatest strengths. He finds this out later in the book when he says “I now understand what Annabeth had said about ADHD keeping you alive in battle. I was wide awake, noticing every little detail”. Another thing that that changes throughout the book is the fact that Percy gets stronger and starts to realize that he is indeed very important, so important that Percy is once told that “The Gods have big plans for him”.

Throughout the book he makes a bunch a few friends that could be of great use to him in the future when he tries to defeat Luke. Unfortunately he makes an enemy out of someone you definitely don't want to be enemies with, Ares the god of war. Percy Jackson is quite possibly the most important Demigod since Hercules.

Wilderness

Authors Note: I wrote this piece about the book "hatchet". It will be my retelling piece.

A young boy survives alone in the Canadian wilderness with nothing to assist him but a small hatchet. Left with only a hatchet he received as a gift from his mother, he then faces survival challenges - building a shelter, hunting for food, fighting off wild animals, big and small. While facing the outside wilderness, he also confronts his inner difficulties following his parents' breakup and what he conceived as his mother's unfaithfulness. After nearly two months of resourcefulness adventures, Brian is rescued, but in the process he had grown and changed to become a new person.

Founding Fathers

Authors Note: This piece is about the Founding Fathers and what I would ask them if I would be able to talk to them.

Dear Founding Fathers,

What I agreed with was, that they were  fighting  for freedom for our rights to be an American, because of them we have our rights. If we didn’t  black people would still be sitting in the back of the bus and white people in the front of the bus. People wouldn’t be treated write but today they are, everyone has their own rights and everyone is treated equally, the same which it should be.

I disagree because one of the presidents fighting but they had slaves why would they fight for freedom if he still has slaves it doesn’t make any sense that he would do that to black people. They should be treated with kindness and respect just like anyone else wants to be, no matter what color they are. Way back in the day but then they should of known that everyone  should have their equal rights and their own way to live.

If I was a person back then I would make sure everyone was treated the same or I would try my best to keep everyone to be treated equal because I love colored people they are some of my best friend’s. Some people these days still don’t get how to treat people right like people kill other people and people bully others like there's something wrong with them but is there really? No because everyone’s different, but I guess not everyone sees that some people still get abused and that’s just not right. What did they ever do to disserve that. It just leads up to pain and suffer and people kill them self, does that really make people happy in life.

Sincerley,
Doug Kropelin

Surviver
Authors Note: This piece is based on the book Hatchet. it is my conflict and resolution.

The book hatchet has a big conflict in it, which is a boy having to survive in the wilderness alone with only a .22 rifle, a hatchet and a couple other supplies. With those supplies he as to survive for, well actually for as long as it takes to find him. It is very dangerous in the wilderness. Especially when there isn’t much he can do to survive. At least he knows how to make a fire which is used as a warning for someone that is lost and a heating source.

During the story a couple terrible things happen to him such as a tornado hitting the spot where he has to stay. In the end a pilot flying a plane that could ,land in water, landed in the lake that he was camping  by and rescued him. He was taken to his father and he told him what had happened.

Never Good to be Cocky
Authors Note: This piece is a short piece about a cocky baseball player. This is my cause and effect piece

Casey is a cocky baseball player that thinks he is the best at baseball but he let’s 2 balls that he could ,have easily hit, but he doesn't. They are down by 2 with 2 people on base. They also have 2 outs and now 2 strikes. With the final pitch coming towards him he swings the bat and misses the ball.

They lost because of Casey having so much confident in him self. When you are cocky it is not a good thing because you could lose and people would start not to like you. Being cocky can have a major effect in your life such as losing friends and getting people mad at you.

The Best Military

Authors Note: i made this because i like the military and i wanna be in the military.

I like the military because they protect us from the enemy's. They also go out into war and destroy targets to protect us from missiles that are being launched at us. They also attack places and kill enemy generals. Killing enemy generals are very important because they could be planning an attack on us. The military is a very important part of the army.

The Amazing Superpowers

Authors Note:I wrote this piece because i always wanted to have super powers. They would make life so much easier.

I would like to have invisibility and be super fast because being invisible means you can sneak in where ever you want and go wherever you want. Being super fast would make things go a lot quicker and be a lot more simple. Having these two superpowers will make life a lot easier.

Sneaking where ever you want will help you cheat on test and steal things. Being super fast will improve the speed on doing those 2 things. These 2 super powers will be a lot of help in your life.

Simile:I am as sneaky as a ninja in the night.

Spring Assessments

Wolves are very cool, but dangerous animals. They can run fast, travel far, and are kind of light weighted. They can also keep themselves warm while they sleep in frozen tundra. They hunt their prey, protect their family, and stay together in a pack. Dogs originated from wolves.

Almost 12,000 years ago humans began to domesticate wolves. People raised wolf pups and they kept the tamest ones to be their own pet. Over thousands of years the babies of pups raised by humans changed and grew much tamer. All though, wolves will always be wild animals, domesticated wolves gradually became the dogs we know today.

Of course wolves became the dogs we know today, but you can’t forget some of the dogs we know today are not as fierce and as fast as wolves. Wolves can run at a top speed of 30 miles per hour. I only know a couple of dogs that can run faster than that. A wolf out in the wild can cover 20 or 30 miles of land in a day, but journeys more than 100 miles in twenty-four hours. I have never saw or heard of a dog that can do that.

Wolves are almost always in a pack, whether it is a pair or a couple dozen. When there is a wolf pack there is always an alpha male. An alpha male is like the leader of the pack. The alpha male is always a male. When the alpha male sticks his head up towards the sun or the moon and howls it means it’s time to hunt.

Wolves are fierce hunters and always on their guard. A wolf can weigh 80 to 100 pounds and are as tall as 3 feet at the shoulder. Wolves can survive in -300 and -400 F. What wolves do is go around and around until they make a spot for them self to lie in the snow. Then they curl up into a little ball cover their nose with their bushy tail.

Wolves are fierce, fast, dangerous, traveling, and light weighted beast of the wild. They can survive in the frozen tundra unlike most animals. Protect family, hunt prey, and stay in a pack together. They are wolves.

Drilling Oil in Alaska

Authors Note: I am writing this piece for social studies. I have researched for some information to write about the drilling in Alaska for oil

Imagine if the US started to drill in Alaska. I would be with and against drilling in Alaska because if we started to drill in Alaska we would be killing animals and natural resources, but if we did oil prices would decrease. We are losing more oil each day, so if we drill in ANWR we would get more oil and oil prices might decrease

If the US did drill we would be killing tons of animals like grizzlies, polar bears, arctic wolfs, caribou, eagles, and the endangered shaggy musk ox, a mammoth like- survivor of the last ice age. It would be terrible to get oil in the oceans by Alaska because there are so many endangered species there. The US would be killing so many things and natural resources such as trees, plants, and maybe oil would get in the drinking water. If that happens people wouldn’t be able to drink water for quiet a while. And people have a chance of dying because they are so thirsty.

When and if the US did start drilling gas and oil prices would go down. That would be a very good thing because gas would go down to at least 4 dollars. If it didn’t we would probably never see gas prices down to 2 dollars again and if we did we would not have to spend so much on vacations and small trips.

There are native people all around Alaska like the Eskimos and the people in ANWR. The Eskimos are  definitely against the US drilling in Alaska because Alaska is their home and we would find more and more oil through out Alaska and be destroying their homes. ANWR is against drilling in Alaska because animals going extinct, destroying natural resources, and oil getting in their drinking water. The US would be destroying the natives land. We have to respect the people that own that land. If they don’t want us to drill there we shouldn’t because they were there first.

If the US started to drill in Alaska we would be destroying their land, their natural resources, and killing animals Oil prices would go down. The US is  losing more and more oil each day. If we did start drilling for oil we would get more oil. I am with and against drilling in Alaska.

Loyalty and Friendship

Author's Note: Lob's Girl is about a girl thats meets a dog and the dog runs away from his owner. Then goes to the main charecters house

To me friends are a really important thing to have in life. Lob's Girl by Joan Aiken is a story about friend ship and loyalty. I enjoyed this this book because it talked about how friend ship and loyalty are important in life. If there was nothing as friend ship or loyalty in life, life would be very boring. Friend ship is very important because if you didn’t have friend ship you wouldn't have friends. If you didn’t have loyalty you might not have friend ships

In the short story, Lob's Girl, the main character and her family went to the beach, and the main character feel and a dog came sprinting to her. Then licked all the sand off her face but at the same time was putting more on because of his tail wagging so fast. When she got up to see what it was it was a cute fluffy dog. They were playing fetch the stick. When the main character had to go the dog and her became really good friends.

Enough said about Lob's Girl. My dogs are my friends they love to play, they are always energetic. But a couple years ago we had to put one of them down. This made me full of sadness because I grew up with her. We got her when she was only 6 weeks olds. Because my other dog was lonely when we left and she always scratched the door. So that’s why we got the other dog.

Friend ship and loyalty one of the most important things to have in life because if you don’t have either one of these you wouldn’t have any friends. I agree about Lob's Girl story  stating that friend ship and loyalty is an important to have in life. Life is going to be boring with out friends because you wouldn’t have any fun or be able to do any thing with friends like birthday parties, hanging out with them, and asking for advice and opinions from people your age.

Lost in the Wild

Authors Note:This is an essay that tells people about the book Hatchet. It is a very good book

Have you ever been stuck out in the wild with only a hatchet? Well in the book Hatchet by Gary Paulsen there was a boy stuck out in the wild with only a hatchet and a couple other supplies. The book is very detailed and has a lot of action. Books with a lot of action tend to pull more people in to the book and make them read it more. Brian the main character has the best determination as he fights the wilderness.

People kept telling me Hatchet is a great book, so this year I decided to read it. I read it and thought it was a fantastic book. The book would be a great book for people that like to read action books. Also people that like to read stories when people are lost in the wild.

Enough said about how amazing the book is. In the beginning the main character is flying in a plane to go see his dad in Canada, he is only in a 2 person plane, but the pilot has a heart attack and the main character has to fly it into a lake. That is a lot of action for in the beginning of the book.

That was a couple of things that happened in the book. There is a life lesson in this book which is determination. If you don’t know what that means it means to never give up. If the main character gave up he would have died of starvation, but he didn’t because he has determination and knows how to survive in the wild.

Gary Paulsen, the writer of the amazing book Hatchet has a lot of action and well detailed. The action in this book pulls more people and making them read more and more. If we didn’t have determination and we were lost out in the wild and we gave up, we would die.

Hatchet

Authors Note: I wrote this piece because Hatchet is a very great book. There is a lot of action in it.

The book Hatchet by Gary Paulsen is a great book. The book is very detailed, it has a lot of action, and it has a good story line. I am only on chapter five but it has been a very good book. The main character is Brian. He goes into an airplane to see his dad in Canada. It is only a 2 person plane. Then the pilot has a heart attack and dies in the plane.  After that Brian has to fly it but it runs out of gas and he has to crash it in a lake. And he is stuck by the lake.
